Cattle guards appeared on roads around 1905, though railroads built something similar decades earlier to ward cows from their tracks. Since fencing sometimes cost dearly and open range laws favored cattlemen, pits were dug at property lines where roads crossed and a wooden grate composed of planks roughly three inches wide with an equivalent space between them, one not wide enough for hooves to be caught, was placed over the pit. This dissuaded animals from moving from property to property, presumably because they feared getting their hooves caught in the spaces. Vehicles could still easily cross and pedestrians could step on the planks to avoid falling through. Gates were installed to either side of the cattleguard in the event herds needed to be moved. Later, metal guards with rounded edges replaced the wooden guards, and occasionally roads were painted with stripes to simulate the guards, requiring frequent re-painting but successful due to cattle’s lack of depth perception.
